Just A Thought I Had...

In the immediate days following the election I have seen numerous articles stating that for the first time, blacks (and other minorities) feel they can truly be anything they dream of. With the election of Barack Obama as the first African-American president of the United States, the hopes and aspirations of black people all over the world have risen to new heights.

As I read these articles, something in my spirit was not settled. Why would people feel they could not achieve their goals? Did people really believe that through their hard work and sacrifice they could not become someone that could make a difference in this world? In spite of racism, sexism, class wars, poverty and sheer ignorance, I believe it is possible. Why do I believe? Not because Barack Obama was elected president (and I am not disrespecting the man and his hard work). I believe because the Bible says in Mark 10:27 that "all things are possible with God".

Why all of a sudden do people increase their faith because a black man was elected president of the United States? Why do people all of sudden have "new hope" in the future because their candidate won? The scripture in 1 Thessalonians 5:3 comes to mind. We that call ourselves Christians better be extremely careful who we put our trust in. I get the feeling that a large number of people have put their faith into a political ideology rather than the Creator of the Universe, the Alpha and Omega, the Savior of our souls.

Are we going to teach our children the truth of God's Word, or live our lives based on the "truth" of this world? The scripture in Mark 7:13 says, "Thus you nullify the Word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that."

Are we nullifying the Word of God when we tell kids that since America has elected a black president, they can FINALLY be whatever they want? Let's be honest....the man hasn't been sworn in yet, and when he is, he has a looooooooooooong road ahead of him in terms of national and international issues. He is still HUMAN; he will make mistakes. He cannot predict the future. He cannot cause nations to rise and fall.
He will not bring lasting, inner peace and satisfaction to anyone. How quickly we have turned from the One who can do all these things and so much more than we can imagine.

I told my daughter last night that you can achieve anything that God has called you to succeed in. No matter what the world may say, what man (or woman) may tell you. If God has ordained it, IT WILL COME TO PASS. If you are waiting for "someone else" to break through and pave the road for you to fulfill your destiny, wait no longer. Someone has done that already. His name is NOT Barack Obama. It is Jesus!
